The Law

by Frederic Bastiat (1801-1850)

The Law was first published as a pamplet in June 1850. Bastiat was a French economist, statesman and author who wrote during the years just before and following the socialist revolution of February 1848. Bastiat's writings refuted the claims of socialism.  Here is part two of his seminal work.

STUPID GREED

A Fatal Tendency of Mankind
Self-preservation and self-development are common aspirations among all people.   And if everyone enjoyed the unrestricted use of his faculties and the free disposition of the fruits of his labor, social progress would be ceaseless, uninterrupted, and unfailing.
But there is also another tendency that is common among people.  When they can, they wish to live and propser at the expense of others... (continue to the rest of the article)

LEGISLATION

The Tennessee League of the South will be actively working with legislators in Nashville during this session beginning this month.
We will primarily be supporting two bills. The first proposal is called the Family Farm Freedom Act and is intended to remove all regulation from the sale of any plant or animal product sold by a family farmer.
The second bill will remove the sales tax on purchases of precious metals for the purpose of investment—both coin and bullion.

CHAPTER MEETING NOTES

At the December chapter meeting in Nashville, our guest was Speaker of the Tennessee House of Representatives, Rep. Beth Harwell.  She gave her insight into what might happen in the next legislative session which begins in January and then answered questions.
During her remarks, she commented that she had been a believer in states’ rights for some time and the she felt the US Constitution has been turned on its head; that the most important government should be that closest to the people.  She also said that there were an increasing number of representatives who felt the same.
During the time for questions, she was challenged as to why there has not been more resistance to “the tyranny of the leviathan” as one member put it.  She was honest in saying that the feds have created a system in which they control the flow of money, and that we have all become addicted to too many “carrots.”  She also informed us that the current Governor has already created a (first-time) contingency budget in case of reductions or the total failure of funds coming from Washington.  The LS members were not entirely happy with some of her responses, but have to give her credit for her philosophical commitment to our cause.

MEMBERSHIP

Your membership in the League of the South is important!
In the era in which we find ourselves, it has become apparent that an intentional attack is underway against the South and all of our institutions.  Historically, the South has always been the most conservative and Christian region of these united States.  Yet, since 1861, there has been a deliberate attempt to rob the individual States of their sovereignty and to centralize all power in the hands of an almighty central government.
The League of the South believes that the answer to these problems is a free and independent Southern republic.
We do not believe that this struggle for an independent South will be an easy one nor a quick one… but we believe that it is the only hope for our children and grandchildren to live free!
Plans are being made to have legislation introduced in Nashville this next January which will have a direct impact on the freedoms Tennesseans should be enjoying — farming/food freedom, firearms freedom, and economic freedom.  If you support our Statement of Purpose, you should be a member.
Membership fees go toward secretarial help, printing, postage and travel expenses.  Every dollar given to the League is an investment in your family’s liberty.
